About
This page lays out the R&D behind the Studio Artifice identity in the shape the final guideline will take. Everything here is a study. Nothing is yet a rule unless it says so.
Strategy, Identity, Application, Production
The identity is strictly monochrome, and it carries four phase colors. What are those colors for? Three instrument traditions give the same answer: in thermal imaging, thin-film interference and color bars, color is a reading on a declared scale, never decoration.
Color appears only with its reference, and the row of four squares is that reference. Hue never builds hierarchy. It only reports a condition.
Mark
Two shapes. The square is the printed patch. The screw is a circle with a cross cut out of its centre, and it is never drawn as a plain filled circle. Set side by side they are the device; the Ⓐ monogram sits beside the wordmark.
On the masters
The wordmark is fixed, outlined art. No live font matches it, so it is never re-set in type.
| Element | Master | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Device | 252.79 × 124.27 | A solid square beside the screw. Used from 14 px to 949 px. |
| Wordmark | 1662.39 × 217.19 | Outlined. Reads as Helvetica Now Display. |
| Ⓐ monogram | 135.65 square | A component instance on the cover. |
| Lockup | 1856 × 269.6 | Wordmark plus Ⓐ. No master combines device, wordmark and Ⓐ. |
| Clear space | 2x / 1x | 2x on top, bottom and outer sides; 1x between wordmark and Ⓐ. |
Open decisions
| Decision | Options |
|---|---|
| Lockup | Two-part (wordmark and Ⓐ, as drawn), or a new three-part master with the device. |
| Greys | Warm (#5C5A54, #7A7871) or neutral. |
| Mark on light grounds | Pure white, or an off-white paper. |
| Minimum sizes | Not yet set for the device or the lockup. |
| Row order | Which phase owns which color is fixed. The order of the row is open (see Color). |
Color
Four phase colors, each tied to one phase. Measured, they span both media: three sit near print's process inks, one near the screen's blue primary. Mixed as light at 41 : 23 : 10 : 26 they balance to a neutral grey near L* 76, so the monochrome system is their balanced sum.
Two orders
The Figma order is canonical. Film order is a proposal: it is the order a thin film passes through as it thickens, and the order the thermal mannequin already uses for heat.
Only the staircase reading depends on order. Every study on this page runs in either order.
Usage
| Rule | Why | Status |
|---|---|---|
| A block never appears without its scale. | Thermal color only means something next to its scale bar. | Proposed |
| Exact hexes only in bands, isotherms and readings. | The mannequin photo lands 0% on target on the vectorscope; the photo is the picture, the hexes are the measurement. | Proposed |
| Iridescence never fills a surface. | Film color appears only where two layers meet, and its hue reports the gap. | Proposed |
| The row of four is the check strip. | Every other appearance of color is checked against it. | Proposed |
Grayscale
Grounds, the register-mark grey, the warm greys from the masters, and the three near-blacks the screen pages are built on.
Ground gradient
One gradient from the masters, a light falloff behind a figure, never under text and never with a hue in it. It reads as lit, not filled.
Near-blacks
Ink, panel and line sit at L* 4, 8 and 14. A badly set screen merges them, so the black level check is built from exactly these three: if the line and panel steps vanish, the display is crushing blacks.
Typography
One family. Helvetica Now Display is the only typeface, everywhere: pages, decks, Rive files and the design system. There is no monospace anywhere, not even for figures or code. Hierarchy comes from scale and value, never weight; Light is kept for display sizes.
Faces
| Preview | Face | Token | Use | Stack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aa | Helvetica Now Display Regular | --type-text | All text, labels, figures | Helvetica Now Display, Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif |
| Aa | Helvetica Now Display Light | --type-display | Display sizes only | Same stack, weight 300 |
Steps on the masters
| Preview | Step | Size | Case | Tracking | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aa | Display | Scaled to format | Sentence | −2% | Covers, titles, reel cards |
| Aa | Body | 24 px | Sentence | +12% | Index and slide body text |
| AA | Label | 18 px | Uppercase | — | Phase bar, taglines, chapter numbers, slide headers |
| Aa | Caption | 18 px | Sentence | — | Index chapter labels |
Settings lines that read like instruments (ε 0.95 · SPAN 18–36 °C) are set in Label, uppercase Regular with tabular figures, never in a monospace face.
Atoms
Four primitives from the masters: square, screw, Ⓐ monogram and cross. Sorted by how much of a cell each one inks, they become a tone ramp, so any image or field can be drawn in the brand's own shapes. The chosen ramp, Brand 5, scales the cross to 72% so it sits halfway to the monogram.
The four units
The Reading
The idea every study tests. The field stays monochrome. Color appears only where a value crosses a declared threshold, and the scale it is read against is always on screen.
Color appears only with its reference, and the row of four squares is that reference.
Heat on the field
The Shape Field with the pointer as a heat source. Brightness drifts on noise and picks a glyph from the Brand 5 ramp; heat lifts cells up the ramp and cools on a known curve. Only cells past the isotherm take a phase color, banded in heat order.
Three directions, one system
| Direction | What a color means | Over time | Where the four blocks appear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermal | A condition now | Live, decays | Isotherm bands on a scale bar |
| Iridescence | The gap between layers, or what has built up | Persistent | Film bands in seams, temper, the live mark |
| Color bars | A known value to check against | Fixed | The row of four as the reference strip |
| Registration | Where a plate landed against its target | Per proof | Four plates on one mark; in register they close to black |
Film spectrum
Thin-film color from 0 to 1000 nm, fitted as 47 stops where position equals thickness divided by ten. All four phase colors are second-order colors of one film, which gives them a physical order. A candidate brand gradient, used only where it reports a gap or a thickness.
Studies
Every live study so far, by label. Each opens full screen and runs in Figma order or film order.
Research notes
| Label | Research | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Brand masters inventory | Mark, wordmark, monogram, lockup, clear space, color and type as drawn; decisions still open are listed under Mark. |
| B1 | Shape Field plan | A grid where each cell draws the shape whose ink coverage matches a drifting noise field. Batched into four paths per frame: 1.4 ms on a phone, 5.3 ms at 2560 × 1440. |
| C1 | Thermal imaging | Thermal color is false color across a declared window. Isotherms color only what crosses a threshold, which keeps a monochrome brand monochrome. |
| E1 | Iridescence | Thin-film color is a reading of the distance between two surfaces. Industry already uses it as a gauge. |
| F1 | Color bars and print checks | Bars and control strips are references of known value that travel with the work. The brand calls the square the printed patch, so the row of four is a test strip. |
Tokens
